About Us

Formed in 1992, the Prostate Cancer Survivors Association of West Michigan is a support group for men with prostate cancer, as well as their families. We partnered with Gilda’s Club in 2001 and serve to offer fellowship, peer counseling, education about treatment options, and discussion of numerous issues relating to prostate cancer–all without any bias or judgement.

We’ve Been Where You Are

The Survivors Association was created and is administered by prostate cancer survivors. We are men who know what you are going through, because we’ve been there ourselves. Our activities demonstrate care, concern, acceptance, and understanding, while at the same time acknowledging the special needs and situations that come from having prostate cancer. In our groups, we discuss various concerns, including the physical, psychological, and emotional side effects from treatment.

Your medical team is certainly the first line of defense when it comes to prostate cancer, but our organization of fellow survivors gives you the opportunity to learn from our experiences. Staying well-informed is a key to allowing you to live your life to its fullest. You will hear about what we’ve found that works best for us. This allows you to gain a new perspective and perhaps decide to make similar choices in your own life.

We Are Where You Are

The Survivors Association is a local organization. We exist to provide support and education for members of our West Michigan community. Men from Grand Rapids, Holland, and other cities and towns come together to share and help each other become stronger every day as we face this disease.

There are many benefits to joining a support group like ours, including being able to see firsthand that you are not alone. More than 1,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer here in West Michigan every year (according to the State Cancer Profiles website). Our goal is to help as many of them as possible in their journey through recovery.

Tackling the problems that can come with prostate cancer on your own is difficult. We know men are naturally wired to be self-reliant and try to take things on alone, but you will find strength and valuable insight when you come to our meetings. Further, beyond the shared wisdom of fellow prostate cancer survivors, we bring in leading medical experts who share news and insightful information with us. You will learn about treatment options and the best steps you can take for optimal health.

We Are Here for You, So You Can Be There for Them

One of our goals is to provide you with the information you need so you can make the best possible decisions regarding your health. This is certainly important for you, but it’s also very important for the loved ones in your life.

No matter your family structure, there are people who love you and want you to be there for both the big things—weddings, births, graduations—and the small ones—spending time fishing, going to a ball game, sitting outside and talking on a sunny summer day. We want you to have as many of those moments as possible, and finding the support you need is a great starting point for doing exactly that.
